It is not merely a list of debtors or defaulters. The registry may also contain information about your existing and past loans, applications you’ve submitted, the amount of your obligations, your repayment history, any late payments, as well as whether you’re a co-borrower or guarantor on a loan. An entry in the credit registry is therefore not necessarily negative. On the contrary, a history of timely loan repayments can demonstrate your payment discipline. Lenders use data from the credit registry primarily to assess your creditworthiness, overall debt, and ability to repay a new obligation. The contents of the registry can thus influence not only the approval of a loan or mortgage itself, but also the loan amount and the terms under which financing will be offered to you. What information the credit registry may contain about you, who has access to the data, how it is used when evaluating an application, how long it is retained, and what you can do if you want to obtain a credit report or find incorrect information in the registry. You’ll find answers to these questions in this article.

What is a credit registry, and what is its purpose?

The credit registry is a database that collects information on loans, credits, leases, credit cards, authorized overdrafts, and other financial obligations. It does not contain only data on individuals or companies that have defaulted on their payments. It also records loans that are being repaid on time, the current amount of obligations, payment history, delinquencies, and, in some cases, information about submitted financing applications. Banks, leasing companies, and other lenders use data from the registry to assess whether an applicant is capable of repaying a new obligation. Therefore, when making a decision, they are not only interested in income or revenue, but also in how many loans the applicant already has, how they are repaying them, and whether there have been any late payments in the past. An entry in the credit registry is not negative in and of itself. A positive history of timely repayments can demonstrate the applicant’s payment discipline and credibility. Problems may arise particularly from repeated late payments, unpaid obligations, high overall indebtedness, or inaccurate data that does not correspond to reality. In this article, the term “credit registry” refers to the Joint Register of Banking Information (SRBI), the Non-Bank Register of Client Information (NRKI), and the Register of Bank Loans and Guarantees (RBUZ).

Why is the credit registry important for companies and executives?

The credit registry is also important when it comes to business financing. When a company applies for a business loan, lease, working capital financing, or a credit line, a bank or other lender may review not only the company itself but, in certain cases, also the individuals who guarantee its obligations or are personally involved in the financing.

For a company executive or owner, this is particularly important when they provide a personal guarantee, issue a promissory note, assume a liability as a co-debtor, or secure a loan with their own assets. In such cases, the company’s financing can also affect the individual’s personal credit standing and, later on, for example, their ability to obtain a mortgage, consumer loan, or other personal financing. The information in the registry may also influence the terms under which the company receives financing. Based on the credit history, the lender may decide on the loan amount, interest rate, and the need for additional collateral or a personal guarantee from the managing director. If a company has multiple loans or a history of irregular payments, obtaining additional financing may be more difficult, even if the company is currently performing well. Managing directors should therefore be aware of which obligations are held by the company and which they have assumed personally. Before signing loan documentation, it is important to distinguish between the company’s obligations and the personal guarantee of a managing director or partner. It is also advisable to verify that the information recorded in the registry corresponds to reality, especially before applying for a large business loan, lease, or mortgage.

The credit registry is not just a registry of debtors

The credit registry is often mistakenly perceived as a list of defaulters. In reality, however, it also contains information about loans that a client is repaying properly and on time. Therefore, the registry may record not only a negative credit history but also problem-free repayment of a mortgage, consumer loan, lease, credit card, or overdraft.

A positive credit history can bolster a client’s credibility when applying for additional financing. A bank or other lender can see from it that the applicant meets their obligations regularly and responsibly. Simply being listed in the credit registry is therefore no cause for concern and does not automatically mean that the client is having trouble making payments.

Repeated or prolonged delays in payment, unpaid obligations, and a high overall level of debt are particularly risky. Even a client who makes payments on time may have trouble securing a new loan if they are already repaying multiple loans or if their existing obligations significantly strain the company’s income or financial capacity. Lenders therefore assess not only whether a client has missed payments in the past, but also the total amount of their existing loans and their ability to manage an additional obligation.

SRBI Banking Register

The Joint Register of Banking Information (SRBI) is a credit registry through which participating banks and building societies exchange information necessary for assessing clients. The registry is operated by the Slovak Banking Credit Bureau (SBCB), and its purpose is to help banks verify the creditworthiness, trustworthiness, and payment history of loan applicants.

SRBI includes data on individuals, including self-employed individuals, such as sole proprietors. The registry may contain information on loan applications, loans granted, mortgages, credit cards, authorized overdrafts, and other bank credit products. The registry also includes repayment history, including positive data on payments made on time and negative data on any late payments. Participating banks regularly update this data.

A bank may check the SRBI, for example, when a customer applies for a mortgage, a consumer loan, or business financing. From the registry, the bank can determine what credit obligations the applicant already has, how they are repaying them, and whether a new loan would place an excessive financial burden on the applicant. Data from the SRBI is therefore one of the key factors in deciding whether to approve a loan, as well as its amount and terms.

For self-employed individuals, it is important to note that their business financing may be linked directly to them as individual entrepreneurs in the registry. The credit history established through business activities can thus influence not only future applications for business loans but also the assessment of personal financing, such as a mortgage. However, SRBI is not primarily intended to record the credit history of business entities, such as limited liability companies or corporations. When financing a company, a bank may consider the personal credit record of a managing director or partner to be relevant, particularly if that individual personally guarantees the company’s loan, assumes liability, or acts as a co-borrower.

NRKI Non-Banking Registry

The Non-Bank Register of Client Information (NRKI) is a credit registry used by participating non-bank financial institutions. These include, in particular, leasing companies, installment sale providers, and other companies offering credit or similar financial products. The registry is operated by the Non-Banking Credit Bureau (NBCB), an interest group of legal entities, and its primary purpose is to reduce credit risk when providing financing.

The NRKI helps lenders assess what obligations an applicant already has and how they are repaying them. It contains both positive and negative information, so it is not merely a list of defaulters. A lender can use the data in the registry to determine whether a client is making payments properly and on time, whether they are in arrears, and whether a new loan, lease, or installment purchase would place an excessive financial burden on them.

Unlike the SRBI banking registry, the NRKI may contain data not only on individuals and self-employed individuals, but also on legal entities, such as limited liability companies or joint-stock companies. Individuals and companies that have entered into a loan agreement with a registry member, use a credit card, or have secured a financing-related obligation may be listed in the registry. The registry may also contain data on applicants who have merely applied for a loan or credit card.

For businesses, the NRKI is particularly important when applying for leases on vehicles, machinery, or technology; when purchasing equipment on an installment plan; or when seeking other non-bank financing. Based on a company’s credit history, a lender may decide whether to approve financing, the amount to be approved, and what collateral will be required. Problematic payment delays or a high level of existing debt can lead to stricter terms, a requirement for additional collateral, or rejection of the application.

At the same time, a company’s managing director or partner should also consider whether, in connection with financing, they are personally acting as a guarantor or another party securing the company’s obligations. Although the debt itself belongs to the company, personally assuming such a guarantee can have separate legal and financial consequences for the managing director or partner.

Register of Bank Loans and Guarantees (RBUZ)

The Register of Bank Loans and Guarantees is maintained by the National Bank of Slovakia and contains data on bank loans and other instruments that give rise to credit risk, where the borrower is a legal entity or a natural person engaged in business. For example, the register may include business loans, credit cards, authorized overdrafts, finance leases, purchased receivables, and collateral for liabilities. The RBUZ thus enables banks to verify the credit exposure of a company or entrepreneur. A legal entity or an individual entrepreneur may request a statement of their data from the RBUZ from the National Bank of Slovakia.

Is there a single central credit registry?

In Slovakia, there is no single universal registry; rather, there are the SRBI banking registry, the NRKI non-banking registry, and the RBUZ registry of bank loans and guarantees. The term “central credit register” is therefore used in everyday language more as a general term for databases that record information on loans, financing applications, and repayment history.

The Joint Register of Banking Information (SRBI) is used by banks and building societies. It contains data on individuals, including self-employed individuals. The Non-Bank Register of Client Information (NRKI) is used primarily by leasing companies, installment sale providers, and other participating non-bank financial institutions. The NRKI may contain data on both individuals and legal entities. The RBUZ is maintained by the National Bank of Slovakia and contains data on the banking credit exposure of legal entities and individual entrepreneurs.

These registries serve a similar purpose: they help lenders assess what obligations a client or company already has, how they are repaying them, and whether they are able to take on another loan, lease, or other financial obligation. These are not entirely separate systems. Information from the SRBI, RBUZ, and NRKI can be used together when assessing creditworthiness so that the lender has the most accurate picture possible of the applicant’s overall credit situation.

It is important for the client to know that a report from just one registry may not always reflect all of their obligations. If they use both bank and non-bank financing, relevant information may be found in both registries. Therefore, when checking credit history before applying for a mortgage, business loan, or lease, it may be necessary to check the SRBI, RBUZ, and NRKI.

Who can be listed in the credit registry?

A person or company listed in the credit registry is not necessarily one that is already drawing down a loan or having trouble making payments. An entry may be created as soon as a loan application is submitted and may also apply to a person acting as a co-borrower, co-applicant, or guarantor. For companies, relevant data may include information about the company itself, as well as about the individuals who have personally guaranteed its obligations.

The scope of the data recorded depends on the specific registry and the type of financing. The SRBI banking registry primarily includes individuals, including self-employed individuals. The NRKI non-bank registry may also include legal entities, such as limited liability companies or corporations.

Loan Applicant

The registry may also include individuals or companies that have merely applied for a loan, lease, or other form of financing. An entry therefore does not necessarily mean that the loan was actually approved or drawn down. Unsuccessful, rejected, or incomplete applications may also be recorded.

For a bank or other financial institution, the number and frequency of applications can be important information. Multiple applications submitted within a short period of time may indicate that the applicant is actively seeking financing or has been unsuccessful with other lenders. However, the mere fact that an application has been filed does not automatically constitute a negative record.

For companies, this may involve, for example, applications for business loans, working capital financing, vehicle leases, or technology financing. The CEO should therefore know how many applications the company has submitted and who is listed in the documentation as the applicant, guarantor, or person securing the obligation.

Principal Debtor

The principal debtor is the person or company that entered into the loan agreement and is responsible for repaying the debt. The registry may contain information about the loan amount, outstanding balance, agreed-upon payments, repayment history, and any delinquencies.

If an individual takes out a mortgage or a consumer loan, they are listed as a debtor in the registry. In the case of a sole proprietor, this may also involve a loan intended for business purposes, since a sole proprietor is not legally separate from their business in the same way as a corporation.

When a company secures financing, the company itself may be the primary borrower. Neither the managing director nor a partner automatically becomes a personal debtor. However, this may change if they also sign the loan documents in their own name, assume the obligation, or provide personal collateral.

Co-debtor or co-applicant

A co-borrower is responsible for repaying the loan along with the primary borrower. In practice, this often involves spouses or partners applying for a mortgage, but a co-borrower can also be another person who helps the applicant meet the bank’s requirements.

A co-borrower’s obligation may affect his or her own creditworthiness even if the principal borrower is actually making the payments. If the co-debtor applies for a loan of their own at a later date, the bank may consider the existing joint obligation as part of their total debt.

A similar situation can also arise in the context of business financing. A managing director, partner, or business owner may be asked to act as a co-debtor for the company’s obligation. In such a case, it is no longer just a company obligation. The person in question may be personally liable for repayment, and the obligation may also affect their future personal financing.

Guarantor

A guarantor ensures repayment of the debt in the event that the primary debtor fails to meet their obligation. Even if the guarantor did not take out the loan themselves, their status may be recorded in the credit registry. Information about the guarantee may be relevant when evaluating their own application for a mortgage, loan, or business financing.

For companies, a personal guarantee from a managing director or partner is a relatively common requirement of banks and other creditors. Particularly in the case of smaller or newly established companies, a lender may require a specific individual to commit to repaying the debt if the company fails to do so.

Signing a guarantor’s declaration should therefore not be viewed merely as a formality. A guarantee can put the guarantor’s personal assets at risk, affect their creditworthiness, and make it more difficult for them to obtain their own mortgage or other loan. Before assuming a guarantee for a company’s obligations, it is advisable to carefully review its scope, duration, and the conditions under which the creditor may demand fulfillment from the guarantor.

Credit cardholder or overdraft account holder

Revolving credit products, such as credit cards and authorized overdrafts, may also be recorded in the credit registry. In this context, it is not necessarily only the currently drawn amount that is important. When assessing creditworthiness, the bank may also take into account the approved credit limit, as the customer may use it in the future.

This means that even an unused credit card or an authorized overdraft can affect the assessment of a new loan application. Before applying for a mortgage or larger business financing, it may therefore be advisable to check which credit lines the applicant still has active.

For businesses, corporate credit cards, overdraft facilities, and working capital credit lines are assessed in a similar manner. High or fully utilized limits may signal an increased need for short-term financing and influence the lender’s decision to grant additional credit.

From the perspective of individuals, business owners, and company executives, it is therefore important to regularly check not only loans currently being repaid but also older loan applications, guarantees, joint obligations, and unused credit lines. The credit registry may contain a broader picture of financial obligations than the applicant realizes, and this information can affect the approval of a mortgage, loan, lease, or business financing.

What information about you does the credit bureau contain?

A credit registry may contain a significantly broader range of information than just whether you have an outstanding debt. It may include your personal identification information, current and previous loan applications, details of loan agreements you’ve entered into, the amount of your existing obligations, and your repayment history. The record may include both positive information about loans that are being repaid on time and negative information about overdue or unpaid installments.

The specific scope of data depends on the type of loan product, the relevant registry, and the role that the individual or company plays in the financing. Different data may be recorded for the primary borrower, a co-applicant, or a guarantor. The Non-Bank Registry of Client Information may also include sole proprietors and legal entities that apply for financing, draw down financing, or secure an obligation related to a loan agreement.

For a bank, leasing company, or other lender, individual pieces of data are not considered in isolation. Together, they paint a picture of what financial obligations a client or company has, how they have managed their repayments, and whether they are likely to be able to handle another loan, mortgage, lease, or working capital financing.

Identification Information

The basis for an entry in the credit registry is data that makes it possible to unambiguously identify the person to whom the information pertains. For a natural person, this may include, in particular:

first name and last name,

date of birth or social security number,

address of permanent residence or other registered residence,

information from documents or other identifying information,

information regarding the capacity in which a person acts in connection with the financing.

The registry thus identifies not only a specific client but also that client’s role in the given credit relationship. The records may indicate whether the person is the primary debtor, a co-debtor, a co-applicant, a guarantor, or another person securing repayment of the obligation.

This distinction is important. A person may be listed in the registry even if they did not directly draw down the loan funds. A typical example is a spouse or partner who joined a mortgage as a co-borrower, or a CEO or partner who personally guarantees financing for their company.

For a self-employed individual, identification information may also include data related to business activities. However, a self-employed individual remains a natural person, and therefore their business financing may also affect the assessment of their personal creditworthiness.

For a legal entity, the following may be listed in the relevant registry, for example:

business name,

identification number,

the company’s registered office,

information about the company’s credit relationship,

information about the persons who are securing the obligation.

The NRKI explicitly includes individuals, sole proprietors, and legal entities that have entered into a loan agreement, are applying for financing, or are providing security for a loan-related obligation. From the perspective of managing directors and partners, it is therefore essential to distinguish between the company’s status as a debtor and their own personal status. The mere fact of serving as an executive generally does not mean that the company’s debt automatically becomes the executive’s personal debt. The situation is different when an executive signs a guarantor’s declaration, assumes an obligation, or becomes a co-debtor.

Information on Loan Applications

The credit registry may contain more than just approved and drawn-down loans. It may also include current or previous applications for a mortgage, consumer loan, credit card, overdraft, lease, or other credit product.

A record may therefore be created even when:

the provider rejected the request,

The client later withdrew the request,

In the end, the contract was not signed,

the applicant did not meet the conditions for drawing down the funds,

The review process has not yet been completed.

According to official information from the SBCB, even a person who has merely applied for a loan product may be listed in the banking registry. The registry also includes co-applicants and guarantors.

Information about loan applications helps the lender assess the client’s current situation. If an individual or company submits multiple loan applications within a short period, this may signal to the lender that the applicant is actively seeking additional funding or is negotiating with multiple lenders at the same time. However, a higher number of applications alone does not automatically mean that a new loan must be denied. The bank or non-bank lender evaluates the application in conjunction with the applicant’s income, existing obligations, collateral, and other circumstances.

For businesses, these may include, for example, requests for:

a working capital or investment loan,

leasing a car, machine, or piece of equipment,

credit line,

a corporate credit card,

financing inventory or accounts receivable.

Executives should have a clear understanding of what applications the company has filed and what stage they are at. When negotiating with multiple creditors simultaneously, it is also important to provide accurate and consistent information about the company’s debt, the purpose of the financing, and its existing obligations.

Information on Loan Agreements

If the application has been approved and a credit relationship has been established, the registry may contain information about the specific contract and its current status. The scope of the information recorded may vary, but it typically provides the lender with an overview of the basic financing parameters.

Type of Loan Product

The registry may indicate whether the case involves, for example:

a mortgage or other loan secured by real estate,

consumer loan,

business loan,

leasing,

credit card,

overdraft,

overdraft allowance on the account,

a building savings loan,

another installment or revolving credit product.

The SBCB states that the banking register includes data on the credit products of participating banks, including installment contracts, credit cards, and non-installment transactions. The type of product is significant because different types of obligations place varying burdens on the customer. With a traditional loan, a fixed or variable installment is typically set. With a credit card or line of credit, the approved limit may also be important, even if the customer has not fully utilized it at a given moment.

Loan Amount or Credit Limit

The registry may record the original amount of a loan granted or the approved limit for credit cards, overdrafts, and similar products. For a new lender, it’s not just a matter of knowing how much the client currently owes. It may also be important to know how much the client still has available and can draw on later.

Even an unused credit card or an authorized overdraft may therefore be factored into a creditworthiness assessment. Before applying for a mortgage or significant business financing, it may be helpful to check whether the client or company has any active credit lines that are no longer needed.

Contract Start and End Dates

The records may contain information about when the credit relationship began, how long it is expected to last, and whether it has already been terminated. Based on the date and terms of the contract, the creditor can assess whether it is a new obligation, a long-term loan, or an existing credit relationship. However, the termination of the contract does not mean that all information disappears immediately. According to the SBCB, the banking registry retains data for the duration of the contractual relationship and for an additional five years after its termination.

Installment Amount

For installment products, the registry may contain information about the agreed-upon installment amount and its frequency. This data helps the lender calculate what portion of an individual’s income or a company’s financial resources is already being consumed by existing obligations. For an applicant, even multiple loans that are being repaid on time can be a problem if their total amount is too high relative to the applicant’s income or cash flow. A positive repayment history therefore does not in itself guarantee approval of additional financing.

When evaluating companies, it is not just accounting profit that is considered. It may also be important whether the company generates sufficient cash flow to make regular payments on loans, leases, and other liabilities.

Remaining liability

The registry may provide information on what portion of the loan remains outstanding. The original loan amount and the current balance may differ significantly, especially for long-term products such as a mortgage or an investment loan.

The current balance helps assess the overall debt of a client or company. The lender compares it to income, the value of assets, existing collateral, and the ability to generate sufficient funds for repayment.

Status of the Credit Relationship

The record may indicate whether the contract is:

active and being repaid on time,

terminated upon full repayment,

in arrears,

called in early,

restructured or modified,

the subject of another agreement between the creditor and the debtor.

The specific labels and scope of information may vary depending on the registry and the provider. However, it is important for the client or company that the recorded status matches reality. If the loan has already been repaid or the error has been corrected, but the registry still shows an incorrect status, it is advisable to request a review and correction of the data.

Repayment History and Delays

One of the most important parts of a credit report is the payment history. From this, a lender can determine not only whether a loan exists, but also how the customer or company fulfilled its obligations during the term of the loan.

The registry may include, in particular:

whether the payments were made properly and on time,

whether there was a delay,

the actual number of days of delay,

the amount of the outstanding balance,

repeated delays,

repayment trends over individual periods,

the possible elimination of the outstanding balance.

The banking registry contains both positive and negative information. Timely repayment can thus build a positive credit history, while repeated or prolonged delinquencies can increase the perceived risk of a client. Banks update the data in the SRBI on a monthly basis. The registry can also record the actual number of days during which a client was in arrears in a given month.

For businesses, late payments may also indicate a broader problem with liquidity or cash flow management. A leasing company or other lender may pay closer attention to a situation where a business regularly makes payments after the due date, even if it eventually pays the arrears. Such behavior may affect the terms of future financing, the collateral required, or the decision on whether a new loan will be granted at all.

The severity of an entry is generally assessed in a broader context. There may be a difference between a one-time, brief delay caused by a technical error and long-term or repeated failure to make payments. A financial institution may take into account, in particular:

the duration of the delay,

the amount of the unpaid balance,

number of repeated late payments,

the time that has elapsed since the problem occurred,

the client’s subsequent behavior,

the total amount of his other liabilities.

Therefore, both individuals and businesses should check the information in the credit registry before applying for a mortgage, a large loan, a lease, or business financing. An incorrect balance, an open contract, an outdated credit limit, or an incorrectly recorded delinquency can affect the assessment of an application at precisely the time when the client needs financing.

How long does an entry remain on the credit report?

Data in both the SRBI banking registry and the NRKI non-banking registry are generally retained for the duration of the credit relationship and for an additional five years after its termination.

Therefore, the record is not immediately deleted upon repayment of a mortgage, loan, or lease. The registry continues to contain information on the repayment history, including both payments made on time and any late payments. A positive credit history can enhance a client’s credibility when applying for future financing.

The five-year period applies in particular to:

mortgages and consumer loans,

business loans and leases,

credit cards,

overdraft accounts and authorized overdrafts,

revolving and other installment products.

With a credit card or an authorized overdraft, it is not enough to simply pay off the current balance. As long as the contract or credit line remains active, the credit relationship is not considered terminated. The five-year period begins only after the product is canceled.

The same principle applies to entrepreneurs and companies. If a managing director or partner personally guaranteed a company loan, was a co-debtor, or assumed the obligation, the financing may also affect his or her personal credit history.

Can the record be deleted earlier?

Accurate and lawfully recorded information cannot be deleted simply because it makes it difficult to obtain a new loan. However, a client may request a review and correction of information that is incorrect, out of date, or recorded without authorization. Before applying for a mortgage, lease, or business financing, it is therefore advisable to check your credit report and resolve any discrepancies in advance.

How can you find out what information about you is in the credit registry?

You can verify the information recorded in credit bureaus by obtaining a statement from:

The Central Register of Banking Information (SRBI),

The Non-Bank Register of Client Information (NRKI),

or from both registries.

SRBI primarily contains information on bank loans, mortgages, credit cards, and authorized overdrafts. NRKI records data from participating non-bank companies, such as those involved in leasing and installment financing. Credit registries are not public lists of debtors. Only the individual concerned or an authorized representative may obtain a report after verifying their identity.

How do I request a credit report?

The procedure is generally as follows:

1. Fill out the official application form available on the registry operators’ websites.
2. Provide proof of your identity or authorization to act on behalf of the company.
3. Submit the application in person, electronically, or by mail, following the current instructions.
4. After receiving the extract, verify that the recorded data is correct.

In the statement, be sure to check the following in particular:

recorded loans, leases, and credit lines,

current balances of liabilities,

Status of terminated contracts,

any delays,

active credit cards and authorized overdrafts,

the status of a debtor, co-debtor, or guarantor,

requests or contracts you are not familiar with.

A report from the SRBI and NRKI can be obtained separately or as a combined SRBI + NRKI report. Although these are two separate registries, the combined report provides a consolidated overview of data from both registries. This report can also be ordered electronically (online). Its price depends on the type of report selected and the delivery method, so it should be verified according to the current price list.

What should companies and executives check?

The company should check the statement in particular for business loans, leases, overdraft lines, corporate credit cards, and repayment history. An executive or partner should also review their personal credit report if they have acted as a guarantor for the company’s financing, assumed a liability, or served as a co-debtor. This is because the company’s credit report may not include all liabilities recorded directly under an individual’s name.

A paid report or a free copy of data under the GDPR?

In addition to a paid extract, an individual may also request a free copy of the personal data processed by the registry operator in accordance with the GDPR.

The main difference lies in the purpose:

A paid credit report provides a standardized overview of a person’s credit history.

A copy of personal data under the GDPR provides information about what personal data the controller processes and for what purpose.

A copy of personal data is generally provided free of charge within 30 days at the latest. However, it may not have the same format or scope as a paid extract. If you find any incorrect, outdated, or improperly recorded data, you can request that it be reviewed and corrected. It is advisable to have this check performed before applying for a mortgage, lease, or business financing.

What should you do if the information in the credit registry is incorrect?

If you find any incorrect, outdated, or unfamiliar information on your statement, please request that it be reviewed and corrected as soon as possible. An incorrectly recorded delinquency, outstanding loan balance, or active contract may affect the approval of a mortgage, loan, lease, or business financing.

How do I go about correcting the data?

1. Specify the error: indicate the financial institution, the specific product or contract, the incorrect information, and the information you believe to be correct.
2. Attach supporting documents: These may include a contract, proof of payment, a bank statement, proof of credit card cancellation, or other correspondence with the lender.
3. Contact the lender: You can request a correction from the bank, leasing company, or other institution that provided the information to the registry. It is advisable to submit the request in writing.
4. Contact the credit bureau operator: You may also submit a request directly to the operator of the SRBI or NRKI, who will verify the information in cooperation with the relevant financial institution.
5. Request a written response: The response should clearly state whether the error was confirmed, which piece of information was corrected, and when the change was submitted to the registry.
6. Check your new statement: Data is typically reported to the registries on a monthly basis, so the correction may not appear immediately. Once the data has been updated, request a new statement and verify that the information is correct.

Can a true negative record be deleted?

Accurate information regarding a past delinquency cannot be removed simply because the debt was later repaid. A correction may be requested if the information is inaccurate, out of date, being processed without legal basis, or attributed to the wrong person. During the review, an individual may also request that the processing of the disputed data be restricted, provided that the legal conditions are met.

What if they refuse to make the repair?

Request a written explanation. If you continue to suspect that your personal data is being processed improperly, you may contact the data protection officer or pursue other legal remedies. In the case of businesses, it is necessary to distinguish whether the error concerns the company, a sole proprietor, an executive, a guarantor, or a co-debtor. If the legal status of the individual in relation to the loan is in question, the content of the contract and the documents regarding the guarantee or collateral will be decisive.

Can a negative entry in the credit registry be deleted?

A true and validly recorded negative entry cannot be deleted simply because it makes it difficult to obtain a new loan. Even if an overdue payment is paid later, this does not automatically remove the record of the delinquency.

A request for correction or deletion may be made, in particular, if the data:

incorrect or out of date,

assigned to the wrong person,

registered without legal grounds,

retained longer than permitted.

A request may be submitted to the financial institution that provided the data or to the operator of the relevant registry. If you question the accuracy of your personal data, the processing of that data may be restricted while it is being verified, provided that the legal conditions are met. A repaid loan will not disappear from the registry immediately. The data is generally retained for the duration of the credit relationship and for an additional five years after its termination. Be wary of services that guarantee the “cleaning” of your credit history. The deletion of a truthful and lawfully processed record cannot be guaranteed.

Will a one-day delay affect your credit history?

Yes, even a one-day delay can appear in the credit registry. However, this does not automatically mean that a mortgage or other loan will be denied.

The bank assesses, in particular:

whether it was a one-time or recurring delay,

its length and height,

how quickly the debt was paid off,

the client’s overall credit history and financial situation.

There is no standard number of days of delinquency after which all banks would automatically reject a loan application. Each lender evaluates applications according to its own rules. If you miss a payment, pay it as soon as possible and check with the lender to make sure it was posted correctly. If the delinquency is recorded incorrectly, you can request a review and correction of the information.

What are the rules for self-employed individuals, guarantors, and business owners?

In business financing, it matters who the borrower is and who is providing the loan. An entry in the credit registry may pertain to a company, a self-employed individual, or even an executive or partner acting as a guarantor or co-borrower.

A self-employed individual may have both business and personal debts registered under their name. These can affect the assessment of both future business loans and personal mortgages. A business entity’s debts are not automatically considered personal debts of its managing director or owner. Personal risk arises primarily when the individual:

guarantees the company’s loan,

will enter into a commitment,

acts as a co-debtor,

will provide its own assets as collateral.

A guarantor, a co-debtor, and a pledgor do not have the same legal status. The decisive factors are the content of the signed documents, the scope of the obligation, and the conditions under which the creditor may demand payment or enforce the security. A personal guarantee may also affect the guarantor’s future creditworthiness. However, selling a stake or stepping down from the position of managing director does not in itself terminate the guarantee. Before signing a business loan agreement, it is therefore advisable to verify who is liable for the obligation, what assets are at risk, and when the personal guarantee will expire.

How Can You Maintain a Good Credit History?

A good credit history is built primarily through the consistent and timely repayment of debts. However, a positive credit history alone does not guarantee approval for another loan. The bank also evaluates your income, existing debts, credit limits, and overall financial situation.

Pay all your bills on time

Keep track of the due dates for your mortgage payments, loans, leases, credit cards, overdrafts, and installment purchases. If you’re paying by bank transfer, send the payment in advance and make sure you have enough funds in your account before the payment is debited.

Address any issues before the due date

If you know you won’t be able to make a payment on time, contact your creditor as soon as possible. You can, for example, negotiate a change to your payment schedule or another solution. However, you generally do not have an automatic right to such a change.

Don’t submit more applications than necessary

Loan applications may also be recorded in credit bureaus. Submitting multiple applications within a short period of time can affect a client’s credit score. Therefore, be sure to compare offers before beginning the formal approval process.

Check your credit limits

A credit card, line of credit, or authorized overdraft may still be relevant even if the balance is zero. If you no longer need them, consider formally canceling them. Paying off the debt does not necessarily mean the contract is terminated.

Check your credit report

It is advisable to review your credit report, especially before applying for a mortgage, lease, or major business financing. Check your balances, active contracts, delinquencies, past applications, and your status as a borrower, co-borrower, or guarantor. Report any incorrect or outdated information immediately and provide supporting documentation, such as a contract, payment confirmation, or other relevant documents.

Do not sign a guarantee without verifying it first

A personal guarantee for a business loan can affect both the guarantor’s assets and future creditworthiness. Before signing, verify the amount, duration, conditions for enforcement, and method of termination. Leaving the company or selling a stake does not necessarily terminate the guarantee.

Credit Registry and Foreign Countries

There is no single, unified credit registry for all countries. The Slovak registries—SRBI, RBUZ, and NRKI—primarily contain data from banks and non-bank financial institutions participating in the registries in Slovakia. Therefore, a foreign loan may not automatically appear on a Slovak credit report. Similarly, a Slovak loan may not automatically be recorded in a registry in another country. However, this does not mean that foreign debts can be concealed. When you apply for a loan, the bank may request information about all your debts, regardless of the country, and may ask for, for example:

loan agreements and balance statements,

bank statements,

an extract from a foreign registry,

documents showing the amount of the payments.

A foreign loan can also affect a mortgage in Slovakia, as it reduces the applicant’s disposable income and increases their total debt. Foreign credit cards, authorized overdrafts, leases, guarantees, and liabilities in foreign currency must also be disclosed.

Loan Abroad

When reviewing an application, a foreign bank may request a Slovak credit report or proof of timely repayment. However, a Slovak credit history is not automatically transferred to the local credit registry. Employment or income from abroad is not recorded in the credit registry. The bank evaluates these factors separately, primarily based on the stability of income, currency, employment status, and the documents provided.

Companies operating in multiple countries

For companies, not all foreign loans, leases, and guarantees need to be recorded in a single registry. A creditor may therefore also review financial statements, foreign contracts, sureties, and obligations of affiliated companies. The debt of a foreign subsidiary is not automatically the debt of the Slovak parent company. However, a surety, guarantee, lien, or assumption of liability may be relevant.

What Should You Check Before Applying for a Loan Abroad?

Before submitting your application, it is advisable to:

check, in particular, the reports from the SRBI and NRKI, and, if relevant, the RBUZ as well,

correct any incorrect information,

prepare statements of account balances and payments,

determine the bank’s requirements in the destination country,

List all domestic and foreign liabilities.

Cross-border use of data must have a legal basis and comply with personal data protection rules. The specific scope of the review therefore depends on the country, the type of financing, and the procedures of the relevant lender.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Credit Registry

Is every person with a loan listed in the debtors’ registry?

A person listed in a credit registry is not necessarily a defaulter or a problematic debtor. Credit registries contain both positive and negative information. They therefore also list clients who repay their mortgages, loans, credit cards, or other obligations properly and on time. A positive credit history can show a bank that a client has experience with making payments and fulfills their obligations responsibly. Simply being listed in the registry is therefore not a negative sign.

Will I still be listed in the credit registry even after I’ve paid off my loan?

Yes, information about a closed credit relationship is generally retained for another five years after it ends. Therefore, the record does not disappear immediately upon repayment of a mortgage, consumer loan, or lease. The registry retains a history of how you repaid the obligation. This may include a positive repayment history with no delinquencies, as well as information about any issues that arose during the term of the contract. According to current information, the five-year period applies to both SRBI and NRKI.

Can I be listed in the registry even if I didn’t receive the loan?

Yes, even a loan application itself may be recorded in the credit registry, even if it was not approved or the contract was not ultimately concluded. Both current and previous applications for a mortgage, consumer loan, credit card, or other financing may be recorded. A large number of applications submitted within a short period of time may be one factor the bank considers when assessing the applicant’s overall situation.

Is the guarantor also listed in the credit registry?

Yes, credit bureaus can also record guarantors, co-applicants, and co-borrowers. Therefore, you may be listed in a credit bureau even if you did not directly draw down the loan funds. Your status as a guarantor may be important when your own application for a mortgage or loan is being evaluated. Furthermore, if the borrower stops repaying the loan, the guarantor may be subject to obligations under the signed guarantor agreement.

How much does a credit report cost?

According to current information from the SBCB and NBCB, a separate extract costs 15 and 21 euros, respectively, plus any applicable shipping costs. Since prices and terms of service are subject to change, you should verify them directly with the registry operator before submitting your request.

Is there a free online credit report?

The credit registry is not a public online database where individuals or companies can be searched by name free of charge. The data is protected and is provided to an authorized person only after their identity or authorization to act on behalf of the company has been verified. A distinction must be made between a paid extract from the registry and a free copy of personal data under the GDPR. A copy of the processed personal data is generally provided to an individual free of charge, within 30 days at the latest. In the case of delivery by mail, the requester may be required to pay the postage.

Could my credit card prevent me from getting a mortgage?

Yes, a credit card can reduce the amount of a mortgage you qualify for, and when combined with other financial obligations, it can also lead to your application being denied. However, this does not mean that every credit card holder will automatically be denied a mortgage. When assessing total debt, NBS rules also take into account a portion of unused credit card limits and authorized overdrafts. For the DTI ratio, 20% of unused credit limits is included in the debt calculation. When assessing repayment capacity, credit cards and overdrafts are also included in existing payments according to DSTI rules. If you do not need a credit card and are preparing to take out a mortgage, simply repaying the amount you’ve charged may not be enough. The entire credit limit may remain active. It is therefore advisable to check with your bank to see if it makes sense to formally cancel the card or limit.

Will a credit card that I don’t use affect my mortgage?

Yes, even an unused credit card can affect your mortgage application if its credit limit remains active. The bank assumes that you may draw down the available funds at a later date.

Similarly, an authorized overdraft or line of credit can be assessed even if the current balance is zero. A zero balance is therefore not always the same as a closed credit product.

Could an authorized overdraft complicate my mortgage?

Yes, an active overdraft facility can reduce the amount of credit available for a new loan, much like a credit card. Overdraft limits are also taken into account when assessing your debt and ability to repay. Before submitting an application, it is therefore a good idea to check any older overdraft accounts or authorized overdrafts that you no longer use but are still contractually active.

How many days do I have to be late for the delay to appear in the registry?

There is no universal timeframe during which a delinquency will definitely not be recorded. Data is reported monthly, and the registry allows for tracking the actual number of days during which a client was in delinquency in the previous month. Even a short delay should therefore be addressed as soon as possible. However, the bank may treat a one-time technical delay differently than long-term or repeated nonpayment.

Does a one-day delay automatically result in the loan being denied?

No, a one-day delay does not automatically mean that every future application will be rejected. The bank may evaluate the length of the delay, the amount involved, whether it has happened before, the time that has elapsed since then, and the customer’s overall financial situation. There is no single threshold that applies to all banks. A one-time, brief delay in payment, especially when the client otherwise has a clean payment history, may not carry the same weight as repeated failure to pay multiple obligations.

Can a negative entry in the credit registry be deleted?

A true and lawfully processed record cannot be deleted simply because it makes it difficult to obtain a new loan. In particular, data that is incorrect, outdated, or processed without authorization may be corrected or removed. Paying an overdue installment will clear the current arrears but will not automatically remove the accurate information that a past delinquency occurred. The right to erasure under the GDPR should therefore not be confused with a general right to have one’s credit history “cleaned up.”

How often is the information in the credit registry updated?

According to official information from the registries, data is reported on a monthly basis and reflects the status as of the end of the previous month. Therefore, the payment of an outstanding balance or the correction of an error may not appear immediately on the statement. Once a complaint has been resolved, it is advisable to request written confirmation and then check the new statement.

Is there a single, centralized credit registry?

In Slovakia, there is no single universal registry; rather, there are primarily the SRBI banking registry, the NRKI non-banking registry, and the RBUZ Registry of Bank Loans and Guarantees. The SRBI contains data on the loan products of participating banks and building societies. The NRKI is used by participating non-bank financial institutions and may also contain data on legal entities. Therefore, an extract from a single registry may not capture all banking and non-banking liabilities. The RBUZ is maintained by the National Bank of Slovakia and contains data on the banking credit exposure of legal entities and self-employed individuals.

Is the lease recorded in the credit registry?

A lease may be recorded in the NRKI if it was provided by a financial institution participating in the non-bank registry. The registry includes data on the products of its member financial institutions and records both individuals and legal entities. Your lease payment history may be important when applying for future financing for a vehicle, technology, or other assets.

Can high debt be harmful, even if I pay everything on time?

Yes, even loans that are being repaid on time can limit your ability to obtain additional financing if your total debt or monthly payments are too high. The bank does not evaluate only late payments. It also assesses existing loans, the amount of regular payments, credit limits, income, and the applicant’s financial reserves. The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) sets limits on total indebtedness and a household’s ability to repay all debts.

Can the bank see that I’ve applied for a loan at another bank as well?

Both current and previous loan applications submitted to member financial institutions may be recorded in the credit registry. Having multiple concurrent applications does not automatically mean your application will be denied, but the bank may evaluate them along with other information. Before formally submitting multiple applications, it is therefore wise to first compare the basic offers and terms.

Is the credit registry public?

No, the credit registry is not a public list of debtors. Neither an ordinary person, a business partner, nor an employer can look up your loans by name without a legal basis. The data is used by authorized participating financial institutions, and the data subject may request their own report or a copy of the personal data being processed.

Can a company be listed in the credit registry?

Yes, the NRKI and RBUZ may contain data on legal entities, such as limited liability companies or joint-stock companies. The registers may include information on credit products, applications, repayment history, and individuals guaranteeing the company’s obligations. The SRBI pertains to individuals, including self-employed individuals.

Is the sole proprietor also listed in the registry?

Yes, a sole proprietor can be registered as a self-employed individual. Their business loans, credit products, or status as a guarantor may also be relevant when evaluating a personal mortgage. This is because a sole proprietor is not legally separated from their business in the same way as a limited liability company.

Could a guarantee for a business loan affect my mortgage?

Yes, a personal guarantee for a company’s liability may be relevant when assessing the guarantor’s personal creditworthiness. The extent of this impact depends on the amount of the liability, the content of the guarantee documentation, the repayment history, and the specific bank’s policies. Therefore, before signing a guarantee, a managing director or partner should assess not only the risk of their personal assets being affected but also the potential impact on future personal financing.

Will I no longer be a guarantor for the company’s loan once I step down as CEO?

Not necessarily. Resigning from the position of managing director or selling a business share does not, in and of itself, necessarily terminate the personal guarantee that a person assumed in their own name. The decisive factors are the content of the guarantee declaration, the loan agreement, and the agreement with the creditor. The termination of a position in the company and the termination of personal liability are two distinct legal issues.

Will a loan from abroad also appear in the Slovak registry?

A foreign loan may not automatically appear in the SRBI, RBUZ, or NRKI if it was provided by an institution that is not connected to the Slovak credit registry. However, when applying for a Slovak mortgage or other loan, you must disclose it if the bank requires information about all existing obligations. A foreign loan payment affects the client’s disposable income and overall debt level, even if it is not directly reflected in the Slovak credit report.

What should I do if I find a loan on my statement that I never took out?

Any unknown loan or application must be reported immediately to both the financial institution and the credit bureau. This could be an administrative error, an incorrect data match, or a possible case of identity theft. Request the identification of the contract and application, gather available evidence, and request a written statement. If the circumstances suggest fraud or misuse of personal data, further legal action should also be considered.

In conclusion

The credit registry is not merely a list of individuals and companies that fail to meet their obligations. It also contains information about loans being repaid on time, existing credit limits, submitted applications, leases, delinquencies, and individuals who act as co-borrowers or guarantors in financing arrangements. This information can affect the approval of a mortgage, consumer loan, lease, or business financing.

Before applying for a larger loan, it is therefore a good idea to check what information is on file about you or your company. Pay special attention to older loans, active credit cards, authorized overdrafts, incorrectly recorded late payments, and obligations you’ve assumed as a guarantor. If the information is inaccurate or out of date, it is generally easier to correct it before the loan process begins than after your application has been denied.

It is also important for entrepreneurs, executives, and partners to understand that corporate financing can have personal consequences. Signing a guarantor’s declaration, assuming a liability, or providing personal assets as collateral cannot be viewed merely as an administrative formality. Such security can affect one’s personal credit standing, future mortgage eligibility, and the extent of assets that will be at risk if the company defaults on its obligations.

Highgate can help you review loan, guarantor, and collateral documentation before you sign it. In the context of business financing, we can review, in particular, the scope of personal guarantees, the conditions for their enforcement and termination, the risks to the CEO or partner, and the potential consequences for personal or corporate assets. A legal review may also be necessary if the information in the registry does not match the actual content of the contract or if a financial institution refuses to correct an erroneous entry.

If you are planning to secure financing for your company, are acting as a guarantor for its loan, or have found incorrect information in the credit registry, please contact Highgate. We will assess the situation within a broader legal, financial, and business context and help you determine the next steps so that you understand your obligations, risks, and options for protecting your personal and corporate assets.

The credit registry plays an important role in the decisions made by banks and other financial institutions regarding whether to approve a consumer loan, mortgage, lease, credit card, or overdraft for you.
